Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity around the world — from storms and floods to wildfires and earthquakes. But while hazards may be unavoidable, the level of human suffering they cause is not.
This video explains the proposed international Treaty on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters (PPED) and why stronger disaster laws and global cooperation are essential to protect communities before, during, and after emergencies. The PPED treaty aims to improve disaster preparedness, strengthen international humanitarian assistance, and ensure faster, more coordinated support for people affected by disasters — especially the most vulnerable.
Through real-world examples, the video highlights how clearer legal frameworks can help governments and humanitarian organizations respond more effectively when crises strike.
The initiative is supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as part of its global work on Disaster Law.

Across the Asia-Pacific, climate change is no longer a distant threat — it’s a daily reality. Every year, millions of people face stronger storms, rising waters, and growing uncertainty. Some are forced to leave their homes. Others are trapped, unable to move without support.

In Bangladesh alone, extreme weather has triggered more than 21 million internal displacements between 2008 and 2024. In 2023, with the support of the IFRC, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) reached 3.4 million people through disaster response and early recovery, and 926,000 through long-term programmes.

This five-minute documentary explores the lives of fishing communities as climate change reshapes their livelihoods and forces displacement.

Since August 2017, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), together with the IFRC and Red Cross Red Crescent partners, has been alongside displaced families from Myanmar - at the forefront of one of the largest, longest-running humanitarian responses in the world.

For eight years and counting, BDRCS teams have worked tirelessly in Cox’s Bazar and beyond to provide lifesaving assistance — from shelter, health, and clean water to protection and community support for displaced Rohingya families and vulnerable host communities alike. Despite immense needs and growing funding shortfalls, this sustained humanitarian action has supported hundreds of thousands of people dependent on aid as the crisis remains unresolved.

The Executive Summary of that plan (which you can download below) covers the scope of the humanitarian needs and the ambition of the IFRC network to reach and support people facing climate risks, disasters, health crises, displacement and other threats to their safety, security and wellbeing.
In 2026, the IFRC will intensify its support to National Societies so that the IFRC network can respond at scale. Our locally led community based action will help people all over the world to anticipate, manage and recover from disaster risks, safeguard their health, protect their livelihoods, build their resilience and ensure they have the information and capacities they need to thrive.

Communities across Puntland and Somaliland are facing a devastating water crisis after more than a year without rain. Traditional water sources have dried up, forcing families to depend on expensive water trucking and to move livestock long distances in search of water and pasture. These challenges are placing immense strain on host communities and worsening malnutrition, as seasonal rains continue to fall far below expectations.

In response to this growing emergency, the IFRC Water Supply Rehabilitation Emergency Response Unit, with support from the Norwegian Red Cross, has carried out a critical assessment to support the Somali Red Crescent Society’s emergency appeal.
